![]() ![]() I’ve got a few more of Tuttle’s recent graphic novels from the Filipino creators in my to-read pile, but next I’ll probably check out Alternative Alamat, an anthology full of myths and legends, to gain a bit of the background knowledge that I’m missing. Malonzo’s art is not inked, and its bold colors work with the lack of dark black lines to make everything feel a bit blurry, like the line between fantasy and reality in the book. I really enjoyed this book, and in particular the way it doesn’t over-explain. ![]() The journey takes them into the Filipino version of faerie, into a magical place even more full of spirits where maybe Conrad can find the help he needs. ![]() (Ignacio is not quite human, maybe.) ![]() While there are some hiccups in terms of pacing and plot reveals, I enjoyed the crap out of this book, and can’t wait for the next one. It has secrets, mysterious characters, and a great balance between humor and cut-through pirate stuff. Tricia Levenseller’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING, is everything I hoped it would be: fun, fast-paced, and badass. I can always get behind a book about pirates, friends. ![]() But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King. More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map-the key to a legendary treasure trove-seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship. That’s what zoologist and children’s book author Nicola Davies explores in Tiny Creatures: The World of Microbes ( public library), with gorgeous art by English illustrator Emily Sutton - a marvelous addition to the best children’s books celebrating science. “You are mostly not you,” microbial ecologist Rob Knight wrote in his fascinating exploration of the human microbiome, in which he pointed out that only 1% of the genes in our bodies are human and the remaining 99% are microbial. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() THE WINTER GHOSTS is a gorgeous illustrated novel inspired by The Cave, Kate Mosse's short story written for the Quick Reads Initiative for adult emergent readers. Freddie's obtuseness does little to help along a gruel-thin story. By turns thrilling, poignant and haunting, this is a story of two lives touched by war and transformed by courage. This is a staunchly old-fashioned story, taking fully 100 pages to get moving, and by the time things pick up, the gist of the narrative will be obvious to anyone who has ever sat through a Twilight Zone episode. ![]() By the next morning, she is gone, leaving Freddie alone to unlock a ghostly mystery hidden for 600 years. In the course of an evening, Fabrissa tells Freddie a story of persecution, resistance, and death, hinting at a long-buried secret. While motoring through a snowstorm, he crashes his car and ends up in the small village of Nulle, where he meets a beautiful young woman named Fabrissa. It is now 10 years since the Armistice, and Freddie, after a stay in a mental institution, has come to the French Pyrenees to find peace. In Mosse's wisp of a new novel (after Sepulchre), Freddie Watson is a stilted young man who has not gotten over older brother George's disappearance on the Western Front during WWI. ![]() ![]() ![]() Agent: Lorella Belli, Lorella Belli Literary.
